Next in Text: What's New With RCS at Postscript
RCS is not just a new format, it’s a smarter, richer way to connect with your audience. And Postscript is here to help you lead the charge. The future of messaging lies squarely with RCS, and it will change how marketers communicate with customers, as well as how we all communicate with one another. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the next generation of messaging that takes the familiar SMS experiences and supercharges them.
The Latest on RCS at Postscript
RCS has been a topic gaining significant traction in the market, and with Apple on board and carriers finally moving, RCS is actually happening - bringing big implications for SMS marketers.
Postscript is in active beta with select customers and while RCS isn't available to every merchant yet, we want to share where things stand and what's coming next.
Current Status: RCS Beta Program Underway
We’re currently running a private RCS Beta Program with a group of ecommerce brands. These customers are helping us test message deliverability, engagement, and how shoppers respond to richer, more branded texts. We’re also collaborating directly with major US carriers to make sure Postscript’s RCS support meets carrier standards and performs reliably across networks.
Here's what you can expect from RCS with Postscript:
Branded, verified sender profiles: Show your shop name, logo, and a Google-verified checkmark and build instant trust
Rich media support: Share high-res images, carousels, product cards — all within your text
Interactive message formats: Showcase multiple products in one message and provide subscribers with quick-tap response options that keep the conversation flowing
Expanded messaging capabilities: Support up to 1,000 characters per message without segmentation, creating a more seamless experience
Smart fallback to SMS: If a subscriber's device or carrier doesn't support RCS, the message auto converts to SMS, ensuring no missed communications
Once RCS is enabled for your account, you don’t need to manage anything manually. If a subscriber’s device and carrier support RCS, your messages— campaigns and automations—will automatically be sent via RCS. If not, we’ll send the exact same message via SMS as fallback. No extra setup, no missed sends, just delivery that adapts behind the scenes.
What's Coming Next
We’re continuing to expand the beta and build on what’s working, from testing engagement with richer creative formats to exploring features like read receipts (where supported). As soon as RCS is viable at scale, we will roll it out more broadly. We anticipate wider availability for RCS soon.
In the meantime, we're learning, testing, and preparing to support more merchants as RCS evolves into a smarter, more brand-forward way to connect. The Core Functionality of RCS
Since RCS is still very new to the market, there are a lot of questions about how it’s actually different from what we can do via messaging today on iPhones and Android devices.
Have you used Google Messages? Then, you’ve already experienced RCS.
Imagine being able to send messages and files using your mobile data and Wi-Fi with new features such as:
High-resolution photos and videos: Forget grainy photos and pixelated graphics. RCS features lets you showcase your products and brand with stunning visuals that capture attention.
Interactive carousels and cards: Instead of simple text links, you can create interactive experiences within your chats, allowing customers to browse products, select options, and even supply suggested responses in the chat.
Verified sender identification: A blue checkmark next to your brand name assures customers they're interacting with the real you, building trust, minimizing the risk of phishing attempts, and boosting deliverability.
Typing indicators and read receipts: Know when the person on the other end is typing and when they’ve read your messages, adding clarity and immediacy to your conversations.
Emoji reactions: Express yourself with emojis translated just as you intend them to be, making your text reactions clear and contextually appropriate.
Sound exciting? All you have to do is turn RCS chats on.

Here's why you should be excited about the impact of RCS on your life:
Enhanced Customer Engagement: With rich media, interactive group chats, and personalized experiences, RCS messages stand out from plain text SMS, driving not just increased visibility but deeper customer interactions that can translate to increased loyalty and conversions.
Improved Conversion Rates: RCS chats help remove friction from the customer journey by enabling direct interaction within messages. Customers can browse products, add items to their cart, and get an answer to their questions without ever leaving their messaging app.
Broader Reach: With Apple devices joining the RCS ecosystem, it's poised to become a truly global RCS network, available across billions of devices worldwide. This promises unparalleled reach, enabling them to connect with customers across geographic boundaries.
Your RCS FAQs
There are a lot of questions about the new RCS messaging frontier. We’ve outlined some of the most prominent questions merchants have been asking about and clarified the confusion.
Is RCS a new app that users must download?
No! RCS is an upgrade to SMS that works through consumers' native messaging apps. Users do not need to download a separate app on their device to send and receive RCS messages.
Is RCS only available on Android phones?
With the recent release of iOS 18.1, RCS services are now supported across most Apple devices. This makes RCS a universal messaging channel, available on iOS devices and for Android users.
Are RCS messages less secure than SMS?
RCS offers verified sender identification, meaning carriers vet brands. This increases consumer trust and helps to prevent spam and phishing attempts.
What are the different types of RCS messages?
There are two types of RCS messages: Basic and Rich. Basic RCS messages are text-only and have a 160-character limit, similar to SMS. Rich RCS messages support multimedia content, interactive elements, and longer text messages.
Is RCS only useful for marketers, or will everyone use it?
RCS supports many use cases, including customer service, transactional messages, and interactive experiences like product catalogs and calendar scheduling. For example, you can send your customers a calendar reminder when it’s time to restock!
What’s the staying power of RCS?
With support from carriers, Google, and Apple, along with interoperability standards like GSMA's Universal Profile, RCS varies greatly but has immense potential to dominate the future of messaging for Android and iPhone users.
What are the rules around compliance with RCS compared to traditional SMS/MMS?
Since RCS is a relatively new channel and technically distinct from SMS and MMS, the compliance requirements for RCS remain in flux. At this time, provided you have obtained prior express written consent to send SMS/MMS messages, you will be able to send an RCS message to that subscriber.
